When Trachtenberg PR sends you an invite, you go. Why, you ask? They always have the best events with the dopest people and the most amazing experiences.
So a few Fridays ago, after receiving a coveted invite, I headed to the Rita Hazan Hair Salon on the established Fifth Avenue. While I’m a girl that’s just as happy going to Super Cuts (sorry, Rita!), I was beyond excited to check out this uber chic 5-star salon.
Let’s just say, it exceeded EVERY. SINGLE. EXPECTATION.

Expecting the prentention that is synonymous with Fifth Avenue’s reputation, to my utter surprise, there was NONE. Upon arrival, I was greeted with open arms as hip hop music jammed in the background (let’s just say, if I wanted to “drop it low,” I’m pretty sure not only would no one judge, but they’d probably join in). As for the salon itself, it was beautiful. Expansive with a “homey” vibe, it is a one-stop-shop that has manicure and makeup stations for a complete “new me, who dis” look.
But by far, the highlight was getting to meet the infamous hair stylist, Rita Hazan. This Celebrity Colorist, Salon Owner and Product Wizard – she owns the cult hair line, The Hair Color Authority – carved a space for herself in the hair industry when it was male-dominated, pretty making her the baddest boss bish there ever was.

Need more evidence? While she was doing a customer’s hair, I commented that she was getting dye on her brand new Gucci shoes. Her response, “I am just making them better.”
*mic drop*
While I was there, I was lucky enough to not only receive an amazing blow out, but also an interview with the Hair Queen (yes, bowing is necessary). Check it out below along with a slideshow of all her drop dead gorgeous hair moments from her celebrity roster.

Erin Cohen: How did you first decide you wanted to be a hairstylist?
Rita Hazan: I always knew that hair was something I was good at, so I decided to attend beauty school at the age of 17. Around that time, I had my eye on working for the hairstylist, Oribe, who was running his own salon on Fifth Avenue, and was visited by 90s supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington. I got my license, walked in and was not leaving until I got a job.
EC: That is so gutsy! So, what or who took your career to the next level?
RH: Working for the hairstylist, Oribe, and assisting the salon’s head colorist, Brad Johns, for 10 years helped garner my own celebrity clientele, including a young Mariah Carey, who was at the start of her musical career. By 2003, I opened my own salon on Fifth Avenue.
EC: Wow! A lot of hard work, but what an accomplishment! And obviously your career and reputation just keeps getting bigger and bigger. What is your advice for other female entrepreneurs?
RH: Work hard. Don’t have a time limit. Be available all the time. Always learn new things, don’t get stuck. Trends change. Know your craft. Listen and learn.
Also, don’t worry about what other people are doing – just focus on your own career. Especially now. On Instagram and Snapchat, it always looks like the other person is doing better, but you can work wonders with editing and a filter. Nobody’s life is better than yours, easier than yours, or luckier than yours. Everybody who is successful, works really hard. Everybody wants a pretty story, and that’s what you see. You don’t see all the bad stuff that happens. Don’t feel like other people have it easier than you. Don’t even focus on what other people are doing. Stay in your lane. Focus on your job, your career, your craft, and I think more doors will open that way.
EC: This hits a spot in my soul, so I am so glad that you said this. Speaking of trends, where do you go for and what inspires you?
RH: I live in NYC – there is inspiration on every city block.
EC: You also own the hair line, The Hair Color Authority, which has a major cult following. What is your number one go-to hair product?
RH: I can’t live without Rita Hazan True Color Shampoo and the Triple Threat. It’s the perfect shampoo for color-treated hair that cleanses and hydrates. It’s not heavy at all, and leaves your hair super shiny and smooth. The Triple Threat is what I use to set and blow dry my hair. It helps it to stay long, healthy and shiny with no split ends.
EC: *takes both products off shelf and buys instantly*
Ok, last question. If you weren’t a hairstylist, what would you be doing?
RH: Honestly, I never had a plan B. There was no other option for me; I just had to pursue my passion.
